Opportunities and Challenges of AV in Indonesia

Currently, automotive technology is developing rapidly. This requires the automotive industry to continually innovate in order to create increasingly sophisticated and smarter technologies. An example of this is  the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). One example of ITS is an Autonomous Vehicle (AV). An example of a AV e vehicle is already in Indonesia. For these AV to be widely deployed, there is still much to work to be done and  preparations made. For example, road readiness, internet network, environmental conditions, as well as regulations related to technical matters. Thus said Dr. Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Transportation of Indonesia, in a webinar organized by President University (PresUniv), Saturday (13/8).

The webinar, entitled Melirik Prospek Kendaraan Otonom di Indonesia: Peluang Serta Tantangannya, included presentations by  four speakers, namely Irjen Pol. (Purn) Drs. Budi Setiyadi, S.H., M. Si., Main Staff of the Minister of Transportation for Land Transportation and Connectivity; Prof. Dr. Chairy, Rector of PresUniv; Dr. Agung Wicaksono, Managing Director of Jababeka Infrastruktur; Jhanghiz Syahrivar, Ph.D., lecturer at PresUniv. In his opening remarks, Sutedja Sidarta Darmono, Director of PT Jababeka, Tbk, conveyed the need for infrastructure development to support the AV ecosystem, such as strengthening the internet network. “For this reason, Jababeka Silicon Valley or Correctio will develop a 5G internet network that can be utilised by AV” he explained.

Prof. Chairy said that a product that is too high in technology, even beyond what consumers think, will be difficult to adopt. “This will disrupt the penetration into the market. So, the easiest way for AV in the future is not to start at level five right away, but to start from a lower level first,” he said. continued Prof. Chairy, after the lower level was adopted, consumers had begun to believe and the facilities and infrastructure were supportive, then only should it slowly being increased to level five. Meanwhile, Jhanghiz conveyed various opportunities for AV. For example, the global market is worth US$76.13 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach US$2,161.79 billion in 2030.
