IGEM Implementation in Learning Activity

Tuesday (21/9), the Environment Institute and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held a webinar entitled “Launching Webinar: Inclusive Green Economy Modeling (IGEM) Course – Indonesia.” The webinar aims to launch an IGEM piloting program implemented in an entire semester learning system. President University (PresUniv) is one of the universities that will carry out the piloting program, together with Sriwijaya University.

Dr. Ir. Yunita Ismail Masjud, M.Sc., a lecturer in the Environmental Engineering Study Program, PresUniv, was one of the speakers in the webinar. She explained the implementation of IGEM in the teaching and learning process at PresUniv. One of them is facilitating students from all study programs through Green Job and Sustainability webinars, both on a limited and national scale. PresUniv students were also given a short training on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), an approach used to analyze the impact of an environmental product. “Because it is still piloting, the LCA program at PresUniv is still only basic and introduction. However, it is hoped that it will be sufficient for students to contribute to their environment,” said Yunita. She hopes that a more advanced LCA program will be implemented in the coming year.

Yunita said the implementation of IGEM is also reflected in research activities and community development projects carried out by PresUniv students. For research, there are already several that are under the Research and Community Development PresUniv. “We often carry out research and community development activities in the form of Project-Based Learning,” said Yunita. According to her, this allows collaboration between lecturers and students. Several research has been carried out: how to convert waste into energy, process agricultural waste, and wastewater treatment. Meanwhile, the community development process has been carried out by providing socialization regarding environmental education to several high schools. (Steven Chaniago, PR team.
