COVID-19 pandemic is still a big problem in Indonesia and also the world. The number of people affected continues to grow, while the vaccine itself is still at the trial stage. One of the transmission sources of this virus is medical waste, such as tissues, used masks, and gloves. Then what is the solution?
This problem is trying to be solved by three President University students. They are Muhammad Haekal Nizar Bahari and Kevin Mulia Christian, both are from Environmental Engineering Study Program 2017, and Muhammad Argo Wicaksana from Management Study Program 2017. Under the Setsail BizAccel, a business incubator owned by President University, they created Olahaja, a smart trash bin product. One of the advantages of Olahaja is its touchless feature, which enables the users to open the trash can without touching it. A wave sensor will be able to detect so that the trash bin will open automatically without any touch. This feature will undoubtedly reduce the risk of waste disposal to contract the COVID-19 virus.
For this innovation as outlined in the business plan, in September 2020, Haekal, Kevin, and Argo won a grant of Indonesian Student Management Business Activities (KBMI) which worth IDR 15 million from the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa), Directorate General of Higher Education, Kemendikbud RI. Congratulations! (GN/SD)
