General Lecture Civil Engineering: Nuclear, a Safe Future Energy Source

Exploring the work prospects of Civil Engineering graduates, President University held a general lecture last Tuesday (10/12). This general lecture presented Bob S. Effendi, Chief Representative of ThorCon International in Indonesia who is also a member of the energy working group in The National Committee of Economic and Industries (KEIN). Thorcon itself is a nuclear engineering company that is designing the ThorCon Reactor, a small modular reactor that employs molten salt technology.

In this general lecture, Bob S. Effendi explained some facts about nuclear technology and its development. According to him, nuclear is a future energy source that is critical for mitigating the worst effects of climate change. For this reason, the construction of nuclear power plants (PLTN) is the right solution to solve environmental, energy and economic problems. He also revealed that the waste generated by the nuclear power plant is safe and can be reprocessed so that it does not damage the environment. “As long as the waste management is right, the myths about nuclear power plants that produce hazardous waste can be broken,” he said.

Lecturer of Civil Engineering President University Riyanto Adji, S.T., M.Sc. revealed that this general lecture was held to broaden students’ insights into the prospects of civil engineering work. “I hope students can understand the scope of work of civil engineering graduates that is very broad. And one of them is the development of nuclear power plants which are being developed by several countries, including Indonesia,” said Adji. In addition to his broad employment prospects, Adji also wants his students to know that by creating various infrastructures, civil engineering graduates are helping the country to develop and be a great country.
