President University to Join UI Green Metric: An Effort on Environmental Sustainability

As an international university, President University concerns the worsening world conditions specifically global warming caused by human activities that damage the environment. President University seeks to take part in reducing environmental damage by minimizing activities that can cause such damage. One of the efforts is to join the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Green Metric, one of a rank system for universities in the field of environment and sustainability. This is a continuous commitment in the effort to increase sustainability and other environmentally friendly activities at President University.

UI Green Metric evaluates how the university is responding to or dealing with the issues of sustainability through policies, actions, and communication. It selects universities by certain criteria which include the collection of basic information on the size of the university and its zoning profile, whether urban, suburban, or rural (the degree of green space). The next category of information concerns with electricity consumption because of its link to our carbon footprint, and transportation, water usage, waste management, setting&infrastructure, energy&climate change, and education & Research.

“We depart from concern, that so far most of the university ranking system has been viewed from an academic perspective, not from an environmental perspective. This is a way for universities to contribute to the world,” said Rijal Hakiki, Chairperson of GreenMetrics UI Program of President University. Other members of UI Green Metrics Program are Bustanul Arifin, BA.IR., MA., Maria Yus Trinity Irsan, S.Si., M.Sc., and Dr. Tjong Wan Sen.

According to Dr. Tjong Wan Sen, Head of Magister of Information Technology, the participation of President University in UI Green Metric become one of the efforts to tackle environmental issues and realized by the rising budget allocation every year.

For a better understanding of the university program related to the environmental issue, several President University lecturers also attended the “The EU Indonesia – Together for Growth” event at the end of October (26/10).

“By attending the EU event, we can further broaden our horizons at President University, especially in making environmentally friendly programs,” explained Maria Yus Trinity Irsan, S.Si., M.Sc, Head of Actuarial Study Program.
