On Thursday, June 27, 2024, students from the Industrial Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, President University (Presuniv), visited PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara, Indonesia’s leading plastic recycling company, located in Serang Baru, Bekasi. This visit was part of their Industrial Ecology course activities. During the visit, the students were accompanied by Yosef Barita Sar Manik, ST, M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of the Environmental Engineering Study Program and lecturer for the course. At Amandina Bumi Nusantara, the Presuniv team was welcomed by Rachel Nathasia, Head of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability.
Yosef emphasized the importance of being more aware of plastic pollution, especially in the ocean. “Plastic bottles that we carelessly throw away are carried by rivers and eventually end up in the sea. These plastics pollute the ocean and take 200-500 years to decompose. Therefore, recycling plastic can reduce the use of non-renewable resources and simultaneously decrease environmental degradation caused by plastic,” explained Yosef.
Rachel Nathasia revealed that Amandina Bumi Nusantara’s is currently focusing on plastic recycling on the island of Java. She stated, “This is due to the high volume of plastic waste generated in Java, particularly by the large cities where residents prefer quick and convenient solutions.” The recycled plastic waste is then processed into food-grade plastic pellets. “We distribute the processed plastic back to various companies,” she added.
