BUiLD Project Consortium Holds Offline Meeting at the University of Gloucestershire

The Building Universities in Leading Disaster Resilience (BUiLD) Consortium again held an offline meeting, on 27th – 29th June 2022, at the University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for the previous two years meetings were always held online. This meeting was chaired by Nadine Sulkowski from the University of Gloucestershire, as the project lead, and attended by Rendika Nugraha S.T., MBA, a lecturer at President University (PresUniv) and representatives from other universities, namely Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Universitas Surabaya, and the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Meanwhile, several representatives from universities also participated in a hybrid way  from the Universitas Islam Indonesia, Yogyakarta, acting as the host.

On the first day, the meeting discussed the Concept of Operations (CoNOPs) of the Center of Excellence (CoE) for disaster resilience. The discussion was led by Michael Fuller MBE, MBA, MA, F.ISRM. Presuniv already has a CoE named Center of Environment, Disaster Resilience, and Sustainability (CEDRS) under the leadership of Dr. Ir. Yunita Ismail Masjud, M.Sc. This discussion is expected to provide a clearer picture of the framework of a CoE, particularly in the area of ??disaster resilience. Furthermore, on the second day, the meeting was chaired by Antonio and Viviana from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto who gave directions regarding the development of Virtual Reality (VR) software, which is one of the flagship activities in this BUiLD project.

Each university that is a partner in the BUiLD project will be equipped with a disaster simulation, which will be  disseminated in the future, by each university to students, staff, and the local community. In the future, university partners are also expected to be able to develop VR-based disaster resilience simulation scenarios by prioritizing the potential for disasters in each area. Beginning with natural disasters and moving to disasters caused by human factors, such as floods and air pollution. On the last day, the meeting discussed the continuation of the formation of a disaster resilience association as a continuation of the BuiLD projects objectives, after the project period ends in 2023 .
