The year 2050 has become an important year for Indonesia. Aside from being the 105th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, Indonesia also needs to achieve a good level of welfare with the HDI (Human Development Index) reaching 0.9 in 2050, where now the number is still at 0.7. Some researchers revealed that energy consumption has a positive influence on the value of literacy and life expectancy, which is one indicator of HDI. In addition, world leaders also agreed that all nations must reduce carbon emissions and achieve a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
To explain more about energy consumption and its impact on reducing emissions, the Civil Engineering Student Association held a webinar with Bob Soelaiman Effendi on recently. Bob, who is the chief representative of ThorCon International in Indonesia and Strategic Director at PT Aditya Dharma Putra Persada, discussed the development of private nuclear power plants in Indonesia and the benefits of it in reducing carbon emissions.
In this webinar, he mentioned ThorCon as clean, cheap, and safe energy that does not only beneficial in pursuing a welfare level target but can also be promising in an effort to meet the net-zero emissions economy. There are four segments he highlights, namely clean, cheap, and safe energy; pursuing welfare targets; energy transitions; and a sustainable economy.
Bob said that nuclear, especially ThorCon could become clean primary energy in the future when fossil energy resources continue to run low. In addition, ThorCon does not produce emissions, both before and during operation so it is arguably more environmentally friendly. In addition to the emissions issue, according to him, nuclear has a high density and the construction of the power plant does not disturb the ecosystem and the land because it has a small footprint. He also mentioned another surprising fact that, in fact, nuclear power plants have the lowest risk of death. (VA/SL)
